the wooly mirror gets an inside view of the band's form & function
------------------------------------------------------------

We stand on freshly watered grass, our backs against a brick wall of indeterminate age. Eric King laughs a dry, sputtering laugh through clouds of blue grey smoke. He’s agreed to answer my questions, despite the band’s almost total adherence to the shadows of obscurity.

WM: What was the  most useful criticism you ever received?

EK: Silence is its own kind of criticism. One of the best ways to keep things in perspective is to walk away from it all.

WM: Talk about a time when you created a new process that was considered risky.

EK: We went back and forth with musical approaches. I think the early stuff that was laid out in one long session probably qualifies. We don’t work like that anymore. (laughs)

WM: Give me a specific occasion in which you conformed to a policy with which you did not agree.

EK: I’d say the tyranny of the verse, chorus structure has always been something that has made us uneasy.

WM: Can you recall a time when you were less than pleased with your performance?

EK: Every few releases, there’s something that ends up being an imperfect expression of where we are as a band.

WM: When was the last time that you thought "outside of the box" and how did you do it?

EK: In our latest material, I’m more interested in knocking over the sandcastle, scribbling over the top of the bowl of fruit. But that’s something you can really only do after you’ve produced a body of conventional work.
